java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out

I have been getting this error for over 5-8 months now, and it seems to occur whenever I enter a minecraft server. I do not know the cause, and I have no idea on how to fix it.

    EDIT: Added pictures

If it is everytime you try to enter a server, it may be that your firewall is blocking java. (incoming or outgoing)

Check your computers firewall and make sure all instances of java are allowed through the firewall.
Google has some good step by step guides if you need them.

    time for more info.

    What antivirus are you running?
    What version of windows?
Have you checked to see if java is up to date?
Do you have any programs like Hamanchi or Tekkit installed?
Are you using a default minecraft client downloaded from minecraft.net?
Have you considered flushing your DNS and do you need to know how?

All i can think of for the moment.

A corrupt minecraft.jar can do this as well. Have you installed any mods recently? If so, what ones, and how?

To flush your DNS, open command prompt as an administrator by going to your 'Run' application, you can search it if need be, and type CMD into the command prompt that the run application gives you, it should ask you if you would like to open it as an administrator, click yes, and then to flush your DNS, type this into your CMD window and hit enter.
    ipconfig /flushdns
Note the space between the g and /

before I do it, what is flushing DNS?

It basically caches IP addresses, but sometimes they can be cached incorrectly, so when you flush it, it is like deleting bad website cookies, but for IP addresses. Then when you reload the IP address through a game or a website, it will re-save the information correctly.

Still doesn't work. I think that it may be server side somehow.

UPDATE: I forgot about including what happens when the error occurs

    what happens is...
1: I lose internet connection temporarily
2: All characters lack a custom skin, and are frozen in place
3: I can move around for about 15-30 seconds before automatic disconnect and the error message

nope, if it was server side it would happen to everyone.

Please go to these two websites and run their tools.
NOTE: there are adverts on the website! read carefully what you are clicking. You do not want to "speed up your PC" or "click here to run a security scan" or anything like that. Just the main test in the middle of the page.

    www.speedtest.net
    www.pingtest.net
For pingtest, you may be asked if you want to run the app. Click yes.

Both sites have a "begin test" button to click at the top of the central graphic. thats what you want.

If you can work out how, please post the results here.

    All fine there.
Upload speed is a little now, but its a standard speed for the UK and we connect fine.

When you say "tried without hamanchi" do you mean you completely uninstalled it or just shut it off?

Try completely uninstalling it and see what happens.

Next step to try is renaming your .minecraft folder (not just deleting the jar, we need a full fresh installation) and force update your client.

After that i am out of ideas.

Lets see how you get on with those two options first.
Then we'll re-analyze. See if we missed anything.

EDIT: one question. Have you ever been able to connect properly from this PC?

1: I tried without hamachi, and with it turned off.

2: Yes, I have, but it is very rare

3: The upload speed may be low due to the weather here right now.

    I tried a full reinstall...still doesn't work.

Ohh... I know what it is... What version of windows are you running? 64 bit or 32 bit? If it is 64 and you are running a 32 bit java, or visa versa, it messes with this, I have seen the issue before, and downloading the correct bit java fixed it.

Final thing I can think of.

Just a reference, if you do install the correct bitage of java, remember to uninstall the other version completely first, if you don't, you will be running both the 32 and 64 bit java programs, which may be a bad thing, and ruin something.

My computers a 32 bit, and I'm sure im using 32 bit java.

    So:
    • Your java installation is correct and up to date.
    • Your firewall is definitely not blocking minecraft or java.
    • You have reset your router.
    • Your internet is low, but not low enough to cause an issue.
    • You have no line problems, as your jitter is only 1%.
    • Your antivirus is not AVG, which has been known to mess with Minecraft.
    • You have Flushed your DNS.
    • You have tried with Hamachi both uninstalled and turned off.
    • You have renamed your .minecraft folder and tried a fresh Minecraft Instalation with no mods.
If all the above is correct, then i am out of ideas. Sorry.

Could it be that your line is simply unstable, and disconnecting you for a brief moment?

A call to your ISP for a line test would be my next choice. Tell they you are experiencing frequent but short disconnects and see what tests they can do for you.

Being sure of it is not enough, you need to look at it and verify you are not running both, or the wrong version of java.

If you aren't, I am out of ideas.
